In our last blog articles, we explored the visceral level, where first impressions set the tone for engagement, and the behavioral level, where usability and interaction determine the effectiveness of training. Now, we move to the final and deepest layer: the reflective level—where meaning, motivation, and long-term retention come into play. Follow along in our last piece of the emotional design system.
Reflective design focuses on how training impacts learners on a deeper level—not just how it looks or functions, but how it resonates with them over time. This is where training shifts from being an obligation to becoming a valuable experience that sticks with learners long after the session ends.
Experience the Reflective Level in Training
Step 1: Think About a Training That Stuck With You
Reflect on a training session that left a lasting impression on you. It could be an inspiring instructor-led session, a powerful hands-on simulation, or even an online course that changed your approach to learning.
-
What made it stand out?
-
Did it connect to something meaningful in your work or personal experience?
-
Did it change the way you think or behave in a professional setting?
Step 2: Identify the Elements That Created a Lasting Impact
Now, consider what contributed to making this training meaningful:
-
Did it tell a compelling story or use real-life scenarios?
-
Did it make you feel personally invested in the outcome?
-
Were there moments where you felt pride, confidence, or a sense of achievement?
Reflective design is all about building emotional connections and making training personally relevant so that learners are not just absorbing information—they are transforming their perspective.
The Importance of Reflective Design in Training
Reflective design is a crucial factor in the training process because it ensures that learning goes beyond surface-level engagement and fosters deeper understanding and long-term retention. Many industries have successfully leveraged reflective design to create more impactful learning experiences.
For example, the medical field uses real-life case studies and patient scenarios to immerse learners in complex decision-making, strengthening their ability to apply knowledge in high-stress situations. Similarly, the military incorporates after-action reviews, where trainees reflect on their decisions and outcomes, reinforcing lessons learned and improving future performance. Even corporate leadership training relies on storytelling and personal reflection to help professionals develop strategic thinking and emotional intelligence.
What Reflective Design Means for Learners
Reflective design ensures that training goes beyond passive consumption—it encourages learners to internalize concepts and apply them in meaningful ways. In aviation training, this means:
-
Stronger Decision-Making Skills – By engaging with real-world scenarios and challenges, learners develop the ability to make informed choices under pressure.
-
Increased Retention & Confidence – A training experience that resonates on a deeper level leads to better recall and the confidence to apply knowledge in the field.
-
Emotional Connection to Learning – When training is designed with storytelling and reflection, learners feel more connected to the material, increasing motivation and engagement.
-
Safer, More Competent Professionals – Reflective learning reinforces aviation safety and compliance by embedding best practices into daily operations. When training is designed with reflection in mind, learners experience:
-
Better Decision-Making – They gain the ability to confidently apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios, especially in high-stakes situations like aviation.
-
Increased Confidence – A deeper understanding helps learners feel more prepared and capable in their roles.
-
Sustained Engagement – Training that resonates emotionally is more likely to inspire continuous learning and professional growth.
-
Improved Safety & Compliance – In aviation, where adherence to protocols is critical, reflective learning ensures that knowledge isn't just retained for a test but ingrained in daily practice.
How Reflective Design Shapes Aviation Training
The impact of reflective design extends beyond individual learning—it shapes how aviation professionals approach their roles. Effective training programs incorporate reflective elements to ensure that:
-
Learning Becomes Practical & Applied – Knowledge is reinforced through real-world application, ensuring pilots, cabin crew, and aviation professionals can confidently translate theory into action.
-
Long-Term Engagement is Fostered – Training should challenge and inspire learners to continuously develop their skills beyond the course.
-
Professional Identity is Strengthened – A well-designed training experience shapes how aviation professionals think about safety, teamwork, and decision-making, embedding best practices into their daily work.
Imagine an emergency training session that doesn’t just explain procedures but puts learners in real-life scenarios where they must make critical decisions under pressure. The emotional weight of those decisions makes the training more impactful and memorable.
Avoiding Common Reflective Pitfalls & Strengthening Learning
❌ Avoid These Pitfalls
- Training That Feels Generic – If content lacks personalisation, learners won’t connect with it on a meaningful level.
- No Real-World Application – Training that doesn’t relate to everyday challenges fails to leave a lasting impact.
- Lack of Emotional Engagement – Without moments of personal reflection, storytelling, or challenges, training becomes forgettable.
✅ Enhance Learning with Reflective Design
- Use Storytelling & Real-World Scenarios – Engaging narratives make training relatable and memorable.
- Encourage Self-Reflection & Critical Thinking – Giving learners opportunities to analyze decisions and outcomes reinforces knowledge retention.
- Inspire a Growth Mindset – Training should leave learners feeling empowered and motivated to improve, not just informed.
How Scandlearn Integrates Reflective Design into Training
At Scandlearn, the visceral and behavioral levels have always been a primary focus—after all, we operate in a business where resources are not unlimited. The aviation industry has traditionally been slow to adopt this innovative thinking, which makes prioritising these advancements even more important.
However, 2019 we released our very first story that takes part of our Dangerous Goods course. This has statistically been shown be very successful in a course which we heard ear way is a training many poeple in the aviation training dreads. due to text heavy, to much ifnormation and often a very dry topic people have a hard time to apply in their daily work.
Below is a sneak peek of how it looked in 2019. Since then, a lot has evolved behind the scenes. Stay tuned for exciting updates!
Our philosophy is that training should resonate beyond the classroom. Recently, we've been prioritising the reflective level more than ever, leveraging new tools, creative strategies, and ambitious goals to enhance the learning experience.
Behind the scenes, we're developing new tools and strategies that will push aviation training forward—we can't wait to share what’s next. While we have to keep some of it under wraps for now, we highly recommend staying tuned for upcoming news and releases.
In the broader scope of our vision, here’s how Scandlearn is planning to integrate the reflective level into our design. Our courses are increasingly moving in this direction to create a lasting impact by:
- Incorporating Meaningful Storytelling – Real-life aviation scenarios that challenge decision-making skills.
- Encouraging Learner Reflection – Structured debriefs and discussion points that allow for deeper engagement.
- Fostering Continuous Improvement – Training that encourages learners to keep evolving in their professional roles.
Elevating Aviation Training with Relective Design
The reflective level of emotional design is where training transforms from information to insight. While the visceral level captures attention and the behavioral level ensures usability, the reflective level cements knowledge into long-term memory and professional identity.
This completes our exploration of emotional design in aviation training. Are your training programs designed to leave a lasting impact?
Let’s talk about how reflective design can make your aviation training more powerful and meaningful.
